Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) have scientific evidence supporting their use in supporting mitochondrial function, primarily through their role as an alternative energy source. MCTs are rapidly absorbed and metabolized by the liver, bypassing the usual fat digestion process, and are quickly converted into ketones. Ketones can serve as an efficient energy substrate for mitochondria, especially in situations where glucose metabolism is impaired, such as in certain neurological conditions or mitochondrial disorders.
Several studies have examined the effects of MCTs or ketogenic diets (which often include MCTs) on mitochondrial function. For example, research shows that MCTs can enhance mitochondrial biogenesis, improve mitochondrial respiration, and reduce oxidative stress in animal models. In addition, MCTs have been explored as part of dietary therapies for conditions like Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and some inherited mitochondrial diseases, where they may help to improve cellular energy metabolism by providing ketones as an alternative fuel.
However, while laboratory and some clinical studies are promising, the overall quality of evidence in humans is mixed and more robust clinical trials are needed to establish clear guidelines. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and some supporting evidence for the use of MCTs to support mitochondrial function, it is not yet definitive, meriting a moderate evidence rating.
