2. Drink the test solution (glucose or lactulose) provided in your kit, which helps detect bacterial and methanogen activity in your small intestine.
3. Collect timed breath samples using the enclosed tubes at regular intervals over about two hours to measure hydrogen and methane gas levels.
4. Send your samples to the laboratory using the prepaid shipping label for expert analysis of your results.
5. Review your results with Dr. Shannyn Fowl to identify signs of SIBO or IMO and receive personalized recommendations for improving your digestive health.
Please note: For legal reasons, the initial consult with Dr. Fowl is required for this test. Both the initial and followup consults are included in the price of this test.
What you can expect
The SIBO/IMO Breath Test provides a simple, non-invasive way to measure hydrogen and methane gas levels in your breath which are two key indicators of bacterial or methanogen overgrowth in the small intestine. Using an at-home collection kit, you’ll capture breath samples over a timed testing period after drinking a glucose or lactulose solution. This process tracks how your digestive system processes the substrate, revealing patterns of fermentation linked to SIBO or IMO. Before starting, you’ll follow a brief preparation period that includes a specialized diet and fasting to ensure accurate results. On test day, you’ll collect a baseline sample, drink the provided substrate, and then complete additional breath samples at set intervals over approximately two hours. Throughout the process, you’ll avoid eating, sleeping, exercising, or smoking to maintain the integrity of your results. Once your samples are complete, simply package the tubes in the provided materials and send them to the laboratory using the prepaid shipping label. Expert analysis of your results identifies abnormal gas production patterns, helping Dr. Fowl determine whether SIBO or IMO is contributing to your digestive symptoms.
