Evidence supporting the use of: L-Gluthathione
For the health condition: Wrinkles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
L-Glutathione is an antioxidant that has garnered interest for its potential anti-aging and skin-brightening effects. Several small clinical studies and in vitro experiments have investigated its impact on skin health, including wrinkle reduction. The scientific rationale centers on glutathione’s ability to neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, both of which contribute to skin aging and wrinkle formation. Some trials have shown that oral or topical glutathione can modestly improve skin elasticity, reduce melanin production, and enhance overall skin appearance. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2017 found slight improvements in skin elasticity and wrinkle reduction with oral glutathione supplementation over 12 weeks, compared to placebo. However, these studies tend to be small and of short duration, with methodological limitations and inconsistent results. There is currently insufficient high-quality evidence to definitively conclude that L-glutathione effectively treats or prevents wrinkles. Major dermatological guidelines do not recommend its use for this purpose due to the limited and preliminary nature of available data. In summary, while there is a plausible scientific basis and some early supportive evidence, the overall strength of evidence for L-glutathione in treating wrinkles is weak and more robust clinical trials are needed.
