Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Isoflavones, particularly those derived from soy, have been studied for their potential effects on skin health, including the reduction of wrinkles. Isoflavones are phytoestrogens, plant-derived compounds with estrogen-like effects, which may influence skin aging by interacting with estrogen receptors in the skin. Several small clinical studies and laboratory investigations indicate that isoflavones can help improve skin elasticity, increase collagen production, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially in postmenopausal women whose natural estrogen levels have declined.

For example, a randomized, double-blind study published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (2007) found that postmenopausal women who consumed soy isoflavone supplements for 12 weeks experienced improvements in skin elasticity and reduction of fine wrinkles. In vitro studies suggest that isoflavones may help prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers due to their antioxidant properties. However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence remain limited, and most studies are small in scale or of short duration. There is a need for larger, well-controlled clinical trials to confirm these preliminary findings. Thus, while there is some scientific justification for the use of isoflavones in managing wrinkles, the strength of evidence is moderate at best.
