Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hydroxytyrosol is a polyphenol primarily found in olives and olive oil, known for its potent antioxidant properties. Its use for supporting or treating wrinkles is based on emerging scientific evidence rather than traditional medicine. Preclinical studies, including in vitro and animal models, suggest that hydroxytyrosol can protect skin cells from oxidative stress, a key factor in skin aging and wrinkle formation. This antioxidant activity may help reduce damage to collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, thus potentially slowing the appearance of wrinkles.
A few small-scale human studies and cosmetic formulations have included hydroxytyrosol, showing modest improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and reduced signs of photoaging. For example, a 2022 pilot clinical trial indicated that topical application of a hydroxytyrosol-rich olive extract improved skin elasticity and moisture in healthy volunteers over several weeks. However, these studies are limited in scope and often combine hydroxytyrosol with other active ingredients, making it difficult to isolate its specific contribution.
There is currently insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to definitively support hydroxytyrosol’s effectiveness in treating wrinkles. More large-scale, well-controlled human trials are needed. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, the supporting data remains limited.
