Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 4
Hyaluronic acid is widely used in dermatology and cosmetic products to support or treat wrinkles, and its efficacy is supported by scientific evidence. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in the skin, where it helps retain moisture, maintain elasticity, and provide structural support. With aging, natural HA levels in the skin decline, contributing to the development of wrinkles and loss of skin firmness. Topical HA products, as well as injectable HA fillers, have been demonstrated in multiple studies to improve skin hydration, elasticity, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Clinical studies have shown that topical application of HA, particularly in low molecular weight formulations, can increase skin hydration and reduce wrinkle depth over periods of 4 to 12 weeks. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2011 (Witting et al., 2011) found significant improvements in skin hydration and reduction in wrinkle depth in subjects using HA creams. Injectable HA fillers, such as those used in aesthetic medicine for facial rejuvenation, offer immediate and well-documented improvement in wrinkle appearance, with effects lasting several months.
Overall, the use of hyaluronic acid for treating wrinkles is scientifically validated, supported by both clinical and mechanistic studies. Its safety profile is generally favorable, making it a cornerstone ingredient in anti-aging skincare and cosmetic treatments.
