Genistein is an isoflavone predominantly found in soy products and is recognized for its phytoestrogenic and antioxidant properties. Scientific interest in genistein’s impact on skin health, particularly for aging and wrinkles, is based on its ability to modulate estrogen receptors and its capacity to reduce oxidative stress—both factors implicated in skin aging. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that genistein can increase collagen synthesis, inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity (which breaks down collagen), and improve skin elasticity. Small human studies and clinical trials have shown that topical or oral genistein may modestly improve skin hydration, thickness, and appearance of fine lines, especially in postmenopausal women. For example, a randomized trial published in 2012 found that topical genistein improved skin elasticity and reduced fine wrinkles in postmenopausal women over 24 weeks. However, the evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short duration, and lack of large-scale, high-quality clinical trials. While there is a plausible scientific mechanism and some preliminary clinical support, more robust research is needed to confirm its efficacy and long-term safety in wrinkle treatment. Thus, genistein’s use for wrinkles is scientifically motivated but currently supported by only modest clinical evidence.
