Evidence supporting the use of: Ferulic acid
For the health condition: Wrinkles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ferulic acid is a plant-derived antioxidant commonly used in skin care products targeting wrinkles and other signs of aging. Scientific evidence supports its use primarily due to its strong antioxidant properties, which help neutralize free radicals generated by ultraviolet (UV) exposure—a major factor in skin aging and wrinkle formation. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that ferulic acid can protect skin cells from oxidative stress and UV-induced damage, both of which contribute to wrinkle development (source).
Furthermore, ferulic acid has been shown to stabilize and enhance the efficacy of other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E. Clinical studies on formulations containing ferulic acid alongside these vitamins report improved reduction in visible signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles, compared to vitamin C or E alone (source). The mechanism involves not only scavenging of reactive oxygen species, but also inhibition of enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin, which are vital for skin elasticity and smoothness.
While direct large-scale studies on ferulic acid alone for wrinkle reduction are limited, the current body of evidence from laboratory research, small clinical trials, and its widespread use in dermatological formulations justify its inclusion for anti-aging benefits. Thus, ferulic acid has a growing base of scientific validation for its role in supporting skin health and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
