Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ascorbyl palmitate is a fat-soluble derivative of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) that is commonly used in cosmetic formulations, including those targeting wrinkles. The rationale for its use is based on the well-established antioxidant properties of vitamin C, which can help mitigate skin aging by neutralizing free radicals that contribute to collagen breakdown and wrinkle formation. Additionally, vitamin C is known to promote collagen synthesis, a key protein responsible for skin firmness and elasticity.

However, while there is robust evidence supporting topical vitamin C (ascorbic acid) for improving signs of photoaging and reducing wrinkles, the specific evidence for ascorbyl palmitate is much more limited. Some in vitro studies show that ascorbyl palmitate can penetrate the skin and exert antioxidant effects, but its conversion to active vitamin C within the skin and its relative effectiveness compared to pure ascorbic acid are subjects of debate.

Clinical trials directly evaluating ascorbyl palmitate's efficacy for wrinkle reduction are sparse. Most data are extrapolated from studies on ascorbic acid or other vitamin C esters. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for its inclusion in anti-aging formulations, the clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness for wrinkles is moderate at best, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
