Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is traditionally used in Chinese medicine as an adaptogen, a class of herbs believed to help the body resist stress and support emotional balance. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Schisandra is thought to "calm the spirit" and is included in formulas intended to address symptoms like worry, anxiety, and insomnia. These uses are rooted in centuries of herbal practice, where Schisandra berries are considered to nourish the kidney and heart, both of which are linked in TCM theory to emotional regulation and resilience to stress.
Scientific evidence for Schisandra's effects on worry or anxiety in humans is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest Schisandra extracts may have adaptogenic and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, possibly by modulating stress hormones and neurotransmitter systems in animal models. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically focused on worry or anxiety are lacking, and the mechanisms remain poorly understood. Thus, while traditional use is well-established, scientific validation is preliminary at best. Most support for Schisandra in this context comes from its long history of use in traditional herbal medicine rather than from modern clinical research.
