Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

1,3,7-Trimethylpurine-2,6-dione is the chemical name for caffeine. Caffeine is primarily known for its stimulating effects on the central nervous system, increasing alertness and temporarily reducing feelings of fatigue. Its use for addressing “worry,” which generally refers to anxiety or excessive concern, is more complex. Some scientific studies suggest that caffeine, at low to moderate doses, may improve mood, increase alertness, and enhance cognitive performance, which could indirectly reduce feelings of worry or stress in some individuals. However, the evidence is mixed: while some people report improved mood and reduced perception of stress following caffeine consumption, others—especially those sensitive to its effects or those consuming high doses—may experience increased anxiety, restlessness, and even panic attacks. Thus, while there is scientific investigation into caffeine's effects on mood and anxiety, the overall evidence does not strongly support its use as a treatment for worry or anxiety. In fact, clinical guidelines often recommend individuals with anxiety disorders limit caffeine intake. Therefore, caffeine’s use for “worry” is not robustly supported by science, but it is not entirely without some suggestive research, hence the evidence rating of 2 out of 5.
