Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mentha haplocalyx, commonly known as Chinese mint, has a longstanding history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for respiratory conditions, including wheezing. In TCM, Mentha haplocalyx is referred to as "Bo He" and is described as having cooling and dispersing properties. It is traditionally used to "disperse wind-heat," "clear the head and eyes," and "benefit the throat," which includes alleviating symptoms like cough and mild wheezing, especially when associated with upper respiratory tract infections or colds. Classic TCM texts, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing, mention its use for conditions featuring constrained Qi flow and phlegm, which can manifest as wheezing.

However, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for wheezing specifically is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Mentha species contain volatile oils (such as menthol), which may have mild bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings are not directly linked to clinical outcomes in wheezing or asthma. There are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically validating Mentha haplocalyx for wheezing in humans. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, the level of scientific evidence remains weak.
