Glehnia littoralis, known as "Bei Sha Shen" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for respiratory conditions, including wheezing, cough, and dryness of the lungs. Historically, it is valued for its ability to "moisten the lungs" and "clear heat," making it a common ingredient in formulas for dry coughs and wheezing associated with lung yin deficiency. The earliest references can be found in classical Chinese materia medica texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," where it is described as beneficial for the lungs and throat.
Modern pharmacological studies have identified some anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of Glehnia littoralis extracts, but direct clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for wheezing is limited. Most of the available scientific studies are preclinical and focus on its chemical constituents (e.g., coumarins, polysaccharides) and general anti-inflammatory properties. There are very few well-designed clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in asthma or wheezing. Thus, the primary justification for its use in wheezing is rooted in tradition rather than robust scientific validation. Further research is needed to clarify its role and efficacy in respiratory conditions.
