Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chen pi (dried tangerine peel) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredient. Its use in supporting or treating wheezing is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. In TCM, chen pi is classified as an herb that regulates qi (vital energy) and transforms phlegm. According to classical Chinese medical texts and formulas, chen pi is used to address symptoms associated with "phlegm-dampness" obstructing the lungs, which can manifest as cough, chest congestion, and sometimes wheezing. It is often combined with other herbs in formulas designed to relieve respiratory symptoms, especially those attributed to excess mucus and digestive disturbances.
While chen pi is widely employed based on these principles, there is limited modern clinical research specifically validating its efficacy for wheezing or asthma-like symptoms. Some pharmacological studies suggest chen pi has anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory effects, but these findings are preliminary and mostly derived from animal or in vitro studies. Therefore, its use for wheezing is best characterized as tradition-based, with some weak supportive evidence from modern research, but not enough to warrant strong scientific endorsement. In summary, chen pi’s application for wheezing is justified by a long history of traditional use in Chinese medicine, with only limited and low-quality scientific evidence currently available.
