Evidence supporting the use of: Robusta coffee
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) is sometimes used in weight loss supplements and diets, largely due to its higher caffeine content compared to Arabica coffee. Caffeine is a well-studied stimulant that can temporarily increase metabolic rate and promote lipolysis (the breakdown of fat). Several clinical studies have shown that caffeine consumption may modestly enhance energy expenditure and fat oxidation, which are potentially beneficial for weight management. Additionally, Robusta coffee contains chlorogenic acids, compounds that have been investigated for their possible effects on glucose metabolism and fat accumulation, though results are mixed and often derived from studies using green coffee extract rather than roasted coffee beans.
However, the overall scientific evidence supporting Robusta coffee specifically for weight loss is limited and largely extrapolated from studies on caffeine or green coffee extract in general. The observed effects are typically modest and may not be sustained over the long term, as tolerance to caffeine’s metabolic effects can develop. There is little direct evidence from large, well-controlled clinical trials focusing uniquely on Robusta coffee's role in weight loss. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale for its use based on active compounds present in Robusta coffee, the level of clinical evidence is relatively weak, supporting a rating of 2 out of 5.
