Evidence supporting the use of: Adzuki bean
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) has a long history of use in East Asian traditional diets and medicine, where it is consumed for its perceived health benefits, including weight management. The traditional rationale is that Adzuki beans are high in fiber and protein, which may promote satiety and reduce overall calorie intake. Additionally, in traditional Chinese medicine, Adzuki beans are sometimes used as a "detoxifying" food and a mild diuretic, believed to help with bloating and water retention, which can be mistaken for weight loss.
However, direct scientific evidence supporting Adzuki beans specifically for weight loss in humans is limited. Most available data are from general nutritional studies indicating that diets high in legumes may support healthy weight management by improving satiety and glycemic control. Few animal studies suggest that extracts from Adzuki beans could influence lipid metabolism, but these results have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials. Therefore, while traditional dietary and medicinal practices support the use of Adzuki bean for weight management, scientific validation is still limited, and the evidence for its effectiveness is relatively weak.
