Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is considered a "rasayana" or rejuvenative tonic. Traditionally, ashwagandha has been prescribed to those who are weak, underweight, or convalescing, with the belief that it promotes strength, vitality, and muscle mass. In classic Ayurvedic texts, ashwagandha is described as “balya” (strength-giving) and “brimhana” (nourishing), supporting the idea that it may help with weight gain in individuals suffering from debility or chronic illness.

Scientific evidence specifically supporting ashwagandha for weight gain is limited. Some modern studies suggest ashwagandha can help increase muscle mass and strength, particularly in combination with resistance training, but these effects are modest and may not directly translate to general weight gain outside athletic populations. For example, a 2015 randomized controlled trial found that healthy adults supplementing with ashwagandha extract demonstrated greater increases in muscle mass and strength compared to placebo, but the absolute weight gain was small and primarily lean mass.

There is little evidence to suggest ashwagandha causes significant overall weight gain or is effective in treating underweight conditions outside traditional contexts. Its use for this purpose remains rooted in Ayurvedic tradition, and while it may support overall vitality, it should not be relied upon as a primary intervention for weight gain without further evidence.
