Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bone marrow has been used in traditional diets and medicine for centuries, but there is also a scientific rationale supporting its use for addressing wasting (severe weight loss and muscle degradation, often seen in chronic illness or malnutrition). Bone marrow is rich in nutrients, including essential fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins (A, K2), minerals (iron, zinc, phosphorus), and bioactive compounds like collagen and glycosaminoglycans. These nutrients are critical for maintaining tissue integrity, immune function, and overall nutritional status.

Modern scientific evidence specifically evaluating bone marrow supplementation in the treatment or prevention of wasting is limited. However, some studies suggest that diets enriched with bone marrow or similar animal-derived fats and proteins can improve nutritional intake and support recovery in malnourished individuals. For example, animal studies have shown that bone marrow can help promote growth and tissue repair. In clinical nutrition, nutrient-dense foods (including organ meats and marrow) are sometimes recommended for patients with cachexia or wasting due to their high caloric and micronutrient density.

Nevertheless, there are no large-scale randomized controlled trials directly investigating the efficacy of bone marrow as a therapeutic intervention for wasting. Thus, while the nutritional profile and anecdotal/traditional use support its rationale, current scientific evidence remains limited, warranting a modest evidence rating.
