Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Antler horn, commonly referred to as "deer antler" or "Lu Rong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used for centuries to treat conditions characterized by "wasting," such as muscle weakness, emaciation, or general debility. In TCM, antler horn is believed to tonify the kidney yang, nourish blood and essence, and therefore strengthen bones and muscles, which are thought to be depleted in wasting syndromes. Classic texts, such as the "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" and later TCM pharmacopeias, describe antler horn as a powerful restorative, particularly for children with developmental delays or individuals recovering from chronic illness. Scientific validation for these traditional uses is limited. Some modern animal studies and preliminary clinical research suggest that extracts of deer antler may influence growth factors (e.g., IGF-1) and have anabolic effects, but these findings are not robust, and comprehensive clinical trials in humans are lacking. The evidence supporting its use in treating wasting conditions thus relies mainly on traditional practice and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific proof. As such, while antler horn holds an established place in TCM for addressing wasting, its efficacy remains to be substantiated by modern medical research.
