Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Animal tissue has been used to support or treat wasting (cachexia or severe weight loss often due to chronic illness) with some degree of scientific validation. Wasting involves loss of both adipose and lean muscle tissue, leading to significant morbidity. Animal tissues, particularly muscle meats and organ meats, are rich in high-quality proteins and essential amino acids, which are crucial for rebuilding muscle mass and supporting overall nutrition in individuals with wasting syndromes.

Scientific studies have demonstrated that dietary intake of animal proteins can help stimulate muscle protein synthesis, especially in malnourished individuals or those with diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, or chronic kidney disease. Clinical trials have shown that increased protein intake, including from animal sources, can help mitigate muscle loss and improve functional outcomes in these populations (source). Additionally, certain animal-derived tissues and extracts (e.g., bovine colostrum, gelatin, and hydrolyzed collagen) have been investigated for their potential to enhance nutritional status and immune function in wasting patients.

However, the evidence is not uniform across all forms of animal tissue, and the benefits may depend on the specific type, preparation, and underlying clinical context. While animal tissue has a long history of use in human diets for supporting health, its role in the targeted treatment of wasting is supported by moderate-quality scientific evidence rather than tradition alone.
