Evidence supporting the use of: Benzoic acid
For the health condition: Warts
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Benzoic acid has a traditional role in the topical treatment of warts, primarily as part of combination preparations such as with salicylic acid (e.g., Whitfield’s ointment or Duofilm). The rationale for its inclusion is largely historical and empirical, rather than being based on robust scientific validation. Benzoic acid acts as a mild keratolytic and antifungal agent, and its use in wart treatment is often attributed to its presumed ability to soften keratin and facilitate the action of stronger keratolytics like salicylic acid. However, the majority of clinical efficacy in wart treatment is credited to salicylic acid, which has demonstrated keratolytic and virucidal effects in randomized controlled trials.
There is limited scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of benzoic acid alone for the treatment of warts. Most published studies and clinical guidelines focus on the efficacy of salicylic acid or cryotherapy. Benzoic acid’s inclusion is generally based on tradition and historical practice rather than strong clinical trial data. Therefore, while benzoic acid is used in some wart preparations, its effectiveness is not well-validated independently, and its role is considered adjunctive rather than primary in wart therapy.
