Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) has been traditionally used in various cultures to support the health of the veins and circulatory system. Historical use is especially noted in European herbal medicine, where yarrow was valued for its ability to stop bleeding (hemostatic effects), reduce inflammation, and promote wound healing. The plant contains several bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and alkaloids, which are believed to have vasoprotective properties. Folk medicine practitioners have used yarrow tea or topical preparations to address varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and general vascular health.

However, the scientific evidence supporting yarrow’s efficacy for the veins is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest mild anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory effects, but there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans specifically targeting venous health. Most recommendations for yarrow in vein support are therefore rooted in traditional or empirical use rather than modern scientific validation. As such, while there is a long history of yarrow being used for this purpose, the strength of evidence remains modest, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
