Evidence supporting the use of: Grape
For the body system: Veins
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Grape, particularly grape seed extract, is scientifically recognized for its benefits to the venous system. The active compounds in grape seeds, known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), have been extensively studied for their vascular-protective effects. Clinical trials and systematic reviews indicate that grape seed extract can help reduce symptoms associated with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), such as leg swelling, heaviness, and discomfort. The mechanisms of action are believed to include antioxidant activity, enhancement of capillary strength, reduction of capillary permeability, and improved venous tone. A 2016 meta-analysis published in "Phytotherapy Research" found that supplementation with grape seed extract significantly improved CVI symptoms compared to placebo. Furthermore, several double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have demonstrated that grape seed OPCs can decrease leg edema and improve microcirculation in individuals with venous disorders. While the majority of evidence pertains to grape seed extract rather than whole grapes, the traditional use and growing scientific validation of grape-derived polyphenols support their application for venous health. Overall, the scientific evidence is robust, though not unequivocal, and grape seed extract is generally considered a safe and effective adjunct for supporting vein health and managing mild to moderate venous insufficiency symptoms.
