Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Lactobacillus plantarum is a probiotic strain that has been studied for its potential role in supporting vaginal health, particularly in the context of vaginitis, which includes both bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). The scientific rationale is based on the ability of certain Lactobacillus species to restore or maintain the normal vaginal microbiota, which is typically dominated by lactobacilli. These bacteria produce lactic acid and other substances that lower vaginal pH and inhibit pathogen growth.

Several clinical studies and reviews have investigated the efficacy of orally or intravaginally administered L. plantarum, either alone or in combination with other Lactobacillus species, for the prevention and treatment of vaginitis. Some randomized controlled trials have reported that probiotic interventions containing L. plantarum can help restore healthy vaginal flora and may reduce the recurrence of BV and yeast infections when used alongside conventional therapies. However, not all studies show consistent benefit, and the heterogeneity in probiotic strains, doses, delivery methods, and study populations complicates interpretation.

While there is moderate scientific support—especially when L. plantarum is combined with other lactobacilli—current evidence does not conclusively establish optimal formulations or efficacy as a stand-alone therapy. Nevertheless, the use of L. plantarum for vaginitis is grounded in a plausible biological mechanism and supported by some clinical data, justifying a mid-range evidence score.
