Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium (mixed)
For the health condition: Vaginitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) is used to support or treat vaginitis based on emerging scientific evidence. Vaginitis, especially bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), is associated with disruptions in the normal vaginal microbiota, often characterized by a decrease in protective lactobacilli and an overgrowth of pathogenic organisms. Several studies have explored the role of probiotic supplementation, including Bifidobacterium species, in restoring healthy vaginal flora and reducing recurrence of infection. While most research has focused on Lactobacillus strains, mixed probiotics including Bifidobacterium have been investigated in both oral and intravaginal formulations.
Clinical trials suggest that Bifidobacterium, when used in combination with other probiotics, can help re-establish normal vaginal flora, lower vaginal pH, and reduce symptoms and recurrence rates of vaginitis. A 2020 systematic review (Falagas et al., 2020) concluded there is moderate-quality evidence that probiotics containing both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains may improve cure rates for BV when used adjunctively with antibiotics. However, the evidence for Bifidobacterium alone remains limited, and its efficacy appears greater when used as part of a multi-strain probiotic.
In summary, while there is growing scientific support for the use of mixed probiotics including Bifidobacterium in the management of vaginitis, the evidence is not as robust or specific as for certain Lactobacillus strains. The overall evidence level is moderate (3/5), primarily based on combination therapies rather than Bifidobacterium alone.
