Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alchemilla vulgaris (commonly known as Lady's Mantle) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for various gynecological conditions, including vaginitis. Historically, the plant has been valued for its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, attributed primarily to its high tannin content. Folk medicine texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use as a vaginal wash, sitz bath, or infusion to relieve symptoms of vaginal irritation, discharge, and inflammation. However, there is limited modern clinical research specifically investigating the effectiveness of Alchemilla in treating vaginitis. Most of the evidence comes from traditional usage and in vitro studies suggesting antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of its extracts. These properties could theoretically benefit cases of nonspecific vaginitis by reducing local inflammation and potentially harmful microbial populations. Nonetheless, the absence of robust clinical trials means that its efficacy and safety for this indication are not well established by modern scientific standards. In summary, while Alchemilla is traditionally used for vaginitis and related women’s health issues, scientific evidence supporting this use is modest and largely preclinical.
