Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has gained scientific interest for its use in supporting vaginal health, particularly for alleviating symptoms of vaginal dryness often experienced during menopause. The oil extracted from its berries is rich in omega-7 fatty acids (notably palmitoleic acid), as well as vitamin E and other antioxidants, which are believed to help maintain the integrity of mucous membranes, including vaginal tissues.

Several clinical studies provide scientific backing for its use. A notable randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in "Maturitas" (2014) assessed the efficacy of oral sea buckthorn oil in postmenopausal women with vaginal dryness. The study found a statistically significant improvement in vaginal mucosa integrity and self-reported vaginal dryness in the sea buckthorn group compared to placebo. Other smaller studies have echoed these findings, suggesting that both oral and topical application of sea buckthorn oil may improve vaginal moisture and elasticity.

While the number of high-quality studies is still limited and more research is needed to confirm optimal dosages and long-term safety, the current body of evidence indicates a moderate scientific basis for sea buckthorn’s supportive role in vaginal health, especially for dryness associated with menopause.
