Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sage (Salvia officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of women’s health issues, including menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Its use in direct support of the vagina, however, is rooted more in tradition than in modern scientific validation. Sage is sometimes included in herbal blends for vaginal steaming or as a topical wash, based on folk practices that claim it can help with vaginal odor, discharge, or infections due to its antimicrobial properties. However, there is minimal scientific research specifically examining sage’s effects on vaginal health. Most studies focus on its general antimicrobial activity, menopausal symptom relief, or its use as an oral supplement. While sage does contain compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, robust clinical trials demonstrating direct benefits for vaginal health or conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, or general vaginal well-being are lacking. Therefore, its use in this context is best described as traditional, with only weak supporting evidence from laboratory studies and historical accounts rather than from modern clinical research.
