Rating (out of 5): 5
Progesterone is a steroid hormone that plays a crucial role in the female reproductive system, including significant effects on the vagina. Its use is scientifically validated for supporting various aspects of vaginal health, particularly in the context of menopause and certain gynecological conditions. During menopause, a decline in endogenous estrogen and progesterone production can lead to thinning of the vaginal epithelium, decreased lubrication, and atrophic vaginitis. Progesterone, often used in combination with estrogen in hormone replacement therapy (HRT), helps maintain the structural integrity and function of the vaginal mucosa by promoting epithelial proliferation and maintaining the pH balance.
There is robust evidence from clinical studies and meta-analyses supporting the use of progesterone, particularly micronized progesterone and synthetic progestins, in managing menopausal symptoms and preventing endometrial hyperplasia in women receiving estrogen therapy. Progesterone’s local effects on the vagina include increasing secretions and maintaining tissue elasticity, thereby alleviating symptoms such as dryness and discomfort. It is also used therapeutically for certain menstrual disorders, including amenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding, where vaginal administration may be preferred for targeted action and reduced systemic side effects.
While estrogen is more directly associated with vaginal atrophy management, progesterone’s supportive role is well-established in scientific literature, especially in combination regimens. Major clinical guidelines, including those from the North American Menopause Society, recognize the value of progesterone in these contexts.
