Estrogen is strongly supported by scientific evidence for its role in maintaining the health of the vagina and the broader female reproductive system. Estrogen receptors are present in the vaginal epithelium, connective tissue, and blood vessels. This hormone is essential for maintaining the thickness, elasticity, and lubrication of the vaginal wall. During menopause, when endogenous estrogen levels decline, many women experience symptoms such as vaginal dryness, atrophy, irritation, and painful intercourse (dyspareunia). These changes are collectively referred to as genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).

Multiple randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have shown that both systemic and local (vaginal) estrogen therapies can effectively reverse these atrophic changes, improving vaginal moisture, elasticity, and pH, and relieving symptoms associated with GSM. Local estrogen preparations (such as creams, tablets, or rings) are particularly effective and have a strong safety profile for most women, as they minimize systemic absorption.

Major clinical guidelines from organizations such as the North American Menopause Society and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend estrogen therapy as the first-line treatment for moderate to severe vaginal atrophy when non-hormonal treatments are insufficient. Therefore, the use of estrogen to support the vaginal body system is grounded in robust scientific validation.
