Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Bacteria, specifically probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus species, are scientifically validated as beneficial for supporting vaginal health. The vagina has a natural microbiota dominated by lactobacilli, which help maintain an acidic pH (around 4.5), providing a protective barrier against pathogenic organisms. Disruption of this balance can lead to conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections. Multiple randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have demonstrated that probiotic supplementation, especially with Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri, can restore and maintain healthy vaginal flora, reduce recurrence rates of BV, and may help in preventing urogenital infections. The mechanisms include production of lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, competitive exclusion of pathogens, and modulation of immune responses. Clinical guidelines from organizations like the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease recognize the potential role of probiotics in managing vaginal microbiome disturbances. However, while evidence is strong for certain strains and specific conditions, not all probiotic products are equally effective, and more research is needed to optimize strains, dosages, and delivery methods. Overall, the use of beneficial bacteria to support the vaginal body system is grounded in solid scientific evidence, particularly in the prevention and adjunctive treatment of common vaginal infections.
