Evidence supporting the use of: Acidophilus
For the body system: Vagina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic bacterium commonly used to support vaginal health. Scientific evidence indicates that L. acidophilus and other lactobacilli play a key role in maintaining the normal vaginal microbiota. Healthy vaginal flora is typically dominated by Lactobacillus species, which help maintain an acidic pH (around 4.5) and inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms through the production of lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and bacteriocins. Several clinical studies have shown that oral or intravaginal administration of L. acidophilus can help restore or maintain healthy vaginal flora, particularly in women with recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV) or yeast infections. Systematic reviews suggest that probiotics containing lactobacilli may reduce recurrence rates of BV and support overall vaginal health. However, the efficacy can vary depending on the strain, dose, and method of administration, and not all products labeled as “acidophilus” have the same effects. While L. acidophilus is not a cure-all, the scientific consensus supports its use as a supportive measure for vaginal health, especially in populations at risk for dysbiosis or recurrent infections.
