White Nettle (Lamium album), also known as dead-nettle, has a longstanding history of use in European folk medicine for various female reproductive health concerns, particularly to support the uterus. Traditional herbal texts and ethnobotanical sources cite its use for conditions such as heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), excessive vaginal discharge (leucorrhea), and general uterine tonification. Preparations made from the aerial parts of the plant, especially the flowers, have been used as astringents due to their tannin content, which is believed to help reduce excessive bleeding. Despite these traditional uses, there is a lack of robust clinical or pharmacological studies confirming the efficacy of white nettle for supporting uterine health. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on historical accounts rather than controlled scientific trials. Some phytochemical analyses indicate that white nettle contains flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, and tannins, which could plausibly contribute astringent and anti-inflammatory effects, but no direct links to uterine health have been established by modern research. Thus, while white nettle is traditionally associated with uterine support, its use is not validated by substantial scientific data.
