Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pubescent Angelica, also known as Angelica pubescens, is a traditional herb widely used in East Asian medicine, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). While its primary uses are for wind-dampness syndromes, such as rheumatism and pain relief, some traditional texts and formulas include Angelica species (notably Angelica sinensis, or Dong Quai) for gynecological health, including uterine support. However, Angelica pubescens is much less commonly cited for direct uterine or reproductive use compared to Angelica sinensis.

Historical records indicate that Pubescent Angelica is valued for its ability to "dispel wind and dampness," and occasionally, it has been included in broader formulations aimed at women’s health. The rationale in traditional systems sometimes extends to promoting healthy blood flow or alleviating menstrual discomfort, though these uses are better attributed to other Angelica species.

Scientific evidence specifically supporting Angelica pubescens for uterine function or female reproductive health is limited. Most research focuses on its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects rather than gynecological outcomes. Therefore, its use for uterine support is largely justified by tradition, with a moderate to low strength of evidence (rated 2). For stronger scientific or consistent historical support in this body system, Angelica sinensis would be more appropriate.
