Progesterone is a steroid hormone that plays a crucial role in supporting the uterus, especially in the context of the female reproductive system. Its primary physiological function is to prepare the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) for potential implantation of a fertilized egg and to maintain pregnancy. After ovulation, progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum in the ovary. If pregnancy occurs, progesterone levels remain elevated to support the uterine lining and inhibit uterine contractions that might otherwise expel the developing embryo.

The scientific use of progesterone to support the uterus is well-established, particularly in reproductive medicine. For example, progesterone supplementation is commonly used in assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), to improve endometrial receptivity and reduce the risk of early miscarriage. Clinical studies have demonstrated that progesterone administration can significantly improve pregnancy outcomes in women with recurrent pregnancy loss or luteal phase defects.

Additionally, progesterone is used therapeutically for other uterine conditions, such as abnormal uterine bleeding and prevention of preterm birth in women with a history of spontaneous preterm delivery. Its mechanisms and benefits are well-documented in medical literature and supported by guidelines from major obstetric and gynecological associations.
