Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligustilide is a major bioactive component found in several traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, notably Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) and Ligusticum chuanxiong. Its use for supporting the uterus and women’s reproductive health is based primarily on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. In Chinese medicine, these herbs have been used for centuries to "nourish the blood" and regulate menstrual disorders, alleviate dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and support postpartum recovery. Ligustilide is believed to contribute to these effects due to its reported antispasmodic and vasodilatory properties, which may help relax uterine smooth muscle and improve pelvic blood circulation.

However, scientific studies on ligustilide’s direct effects on the uterus are limited and mostly preclinical. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest ligustilide may reduce uterine muscle contraction and have anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings have not been extensively validated in human trials. There is currently insufficient clinical evidence to support its efficacy for specific uterine conditions. Therefore, while ligustilide is widely used in traditional herbal formulas for women’s health, its use is justified primarily by traditional knowledge rather than conclusive scientific research.
