Evidence supporting the use of: Fo-ti
For the body system: Uterus
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Fo-Ti (Polygonum multiflorum), also known as He Shou Wu, has historically been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for a variety of health purposes, including promoting longevity, vitality, and reproductive health. In TCM, Fo-Ti is believed to nourish the blood and tonify the kidney and liver, which are considered important for overall reproductive health, including the uterus. The herb has been incorporated into formulas aimed at supporting women’s reproductive systems, especially for symptoms related to aging or menstruation.
However, there is minimal direct scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Fo-Ti for uterine health or function. Most modern studies on Fo-Ti focus on its antioxidant, neuroprotective, and anti-aging properties, rather than its effects on the uterus. As such, the justification for its use in supporting the uterus stems primarily from traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than validated clinical research. While some preliminary studies suggest Fo-Ti may have hormone-modulating effects, these findings are not robust or specific enough to confirm efficacy for uterine health by modern standards. Therefore, its rating for evidence in supporting the uterus is low and based mainly on tradition.
