Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American and European herbalists, for a variety of women's health concerns, including those related to the uterus and reproductive system. The oil extracted from its seeds is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that is believed to have anti-inflammatory and hormone-modulating properties. Traditional uses have included supporting menstrual health, alleviating premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and, less commonly, promoting uterine health and easing symptoms associated with menopause.

However, scientific research specifically validating the use of Evening Primrose for direct uterine support is limited. Most clinical studies have focused on its effect on PMS, mastalgia (breast pain), or eczema, with inconsistent results. There is some anecdotal and traditional evidence suggesting that Evening Primrose oil may help regulate the menstrual cycle or ease menstrual discomfort, but robust clinical data for its efficacy in supporting uterine health is lacking. Therefore, while its use for the uterus is supported by tradition and historical use, scientific validation remains insufficient at this time, resulting in a relatively low evidence rating.
