Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Yam (Dioscorea opposita, sometimes referred to as Dioscorea villosa or "shan yao") is traditionally used in Chinese medicine to support the reproductive system, including the uterus. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chinese Yam is believed to tonify the spleen and kidney, nourish yin, and support female health, especially in cases of leucorrhea, menstrual irregularities, and general reproductive weakness. The herb is often included in formulas aimed at "strengthening the uterus" and promoting fertility. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented in classical texts and widely practiced, there is limited direct scientific evidence confirming Chinese Yam’s efficacy for uterine health specifically. Some studies have explored its phytoestrogen content and potential hormone-modulating effects, but these are generally preliminary and not uterus-specific. Most available research focuses on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and general tonic properties rather than direct support of the uterus. Therefore, its use for uterine health is justified mainly by a long history of traditional practice rather than robust clinical trials or scientific consensus.
