Chinese peony (Paeonia lactiflora) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly for supporting women's reproductive health and the uterus. It is commonly included in well-known formulas such as Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang and Dang Gui Shao Yao San, which are prescribed to address menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and other gynecological concerns. In TCM theory, Chinese peony is believed to nourish the blood, regulate menstruation, and alleviate pain by relaxing smooth muscle tissue. Historical texts and pharmacopoeias from China describe its use for these purposes spanning centuries.

While there is some emerging scientific research exploring the pharmacological properties of peony root—such as its antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and hormone-modulating effects—clinical evidence directly supporting its specific effects on uterine health is still limited. Most modern studies are preclinical or involve animal models, with only a few small-scale human trials. Thus, the primary justification for its use in supporting the uterus comes from traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. Nevertheless, Chinese peony remains a staple in herbal medicine for gynecological health, especially in East Asia.
