Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Chinese Motherwort (Leonurus japonicus, also known as Yi Mu Cao) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries to support women's reproductive health, particularly the uterus. Historical texts describe its use to promote menstruation, resolve blood stasis, and address a variety of gynecological conditions such as irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and postpartum abdominal pain. The herb is believed to invigorate blood circulation and regulate menstrual flow, making it a common ingredient in formulas aimed at supporting the uterus and reproductive system.

Some modern pharmacological studies have explored the plant’s potential effects, including uterotonic (stimulating uterine contractions), anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but most of the evidence remains preclinical (i.e., in vitro or animal studies). There is a lack of large, high-quality clinical trials demonstrating clear efficacy for uterine health in humans. Therefore, while its use is strongly rooted in tradition and supported by historical usage, scientific validation is limited and not robust enough to elevate the evidence rating beyond a moderate level. In summary, Chinese Motherwort's reputation for supporting the uterus is primarily based on traditional practices, with some preliminary but inconclusive scientific support.
