Evidence supporting the use of: Angelica gigas nakai
For the body system: Uterus
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Angelica gigas Nakai, commonly known as Korean Angelica or "Dang-Gui," has been traditionally used in East Asian herbal medicine, particularly in Korea and China, to support women's reproductive health, including the uterus. Historical texts and traditional practitioners recommend Angelica gigas for menstrual disorders, irregular menstruation, and to "nourish the blood"—a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine associated with uterine health. The root is often included in formulas aimed at alleviating symptoms related to menstruation or menopause.
Scientific research on Angelica gigas specifically for direct uterine support is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that its active compounds, such as decursin and decursinol angelate, may have anti-inflammatory and estrogenic activities. However, most available studies are preliminary and not directly focused on clinical uterine outcomes in humans. The bulk of evidence for its use to support the uterus is based on traditional medical systems rather than on robust, high-quality clinical trials. Therefore, while there is a longstanding tradition of using Angelica gigas for uterine health, scientific validation remains limited at this time.
