For the health condition: Urine (scant)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Aloe vera has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for a variety of ailments, including urinary issues such as scanty urination (oliguria). In these traditions, aloe vera is considered to have cooling, soothing, and mildly diuretic properties. The mucilaginous gel from the inner leaf is sometimes used in decoctions or juices intended to "cleanse" the urinary tract and increase urine flow. In Ayurveda, aloe vera (known as "Kumari") is used to balance the "pitta" dosha and is believed to help flush out toxins and support kidney and bladder health, which might indirectly address conditions like scanty urine.
However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. While some small studies and animal research suggest aloe vera may have mild diuretic effects, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most of the positive claims stem from traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific validation. Furthermore, the latex portion of the aloe plant contains compounds that can act as laxatives, which can cause dehydration if misused and potentially worsen urinary output. Therefore, while aloe vera does have a traditional basis for use in treating scanty urine, its efficacy and safety for this specific condition have not been firmly established by modern science.
