Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Southern Elder (Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis), commonly known as elderberry, has a long history of traditional use in various cultures for a range of ailments, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Folk medicine practices have recommended elderberry preparations—such as teas, infusions, and syrups—for their purported diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects, which were believed to help flush out the urinary tract and relieve symptoms associated with UTIs. However, while these uses are documented in ethnobotanical texts and historical accounts, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Southern Elder specifically for the treatment or prevention of UTIs. Most modern research on elderberry focuses on its antiviral properties, particularly in relation to respiratory illnesses like influenza. There are few, if any, well-designed clinical trials evaluating its effects on urinary tract health. As such, while elderberry is traditionally used for UTIs in herbal medicine, this use is not strongly backed by scientific data.
