Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, for a variety of ailments, including as a diuretic and for supporting urinary tract health. In folk medicine, sorrel has been used to "cleanse the blood," reduce inflammation, and promote urination, which led to its use in addressing urinary tract discomforts such as those found in urinary tract infections (UTIs). The plant contains organic acids (notably oxalic acid), flavonoids, and tannins, which have been attributed to its mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties in traditional practice. However, robust scientific studies specifically evaluating sorrel's efficacy against UTIs are lacking. Some in vitro studies suggest mild antibacterial activity of Rumex species extracts, but such findings have not been validated in clinical trials for UTIs. As a result, while sorrel's use for urinary tract health is rooted in traditional herbalism, there is insufficient modern scientific evidence to recommend it as an effective or primary treatment for UTIs. Standard medical approaches, such as antibiotics, remain the evidence-based treatment for this condition. Thus, sorrel's use is justified primarily by tradition, not by strong scientific validation.
