Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ovate Buchu (Agathosma crenulata) has a long history of traditional use by the indigenous people of South Africa for managing urinary tract ailments, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). The leaves were commonly brewed into teas or tinctures and used as a diuretic and antiseptic to relieve symptoms of urinary discomfort. Early European settlers adopted this practice, and buchu became popular in Western herbal medicine during the 19th and early 20th centuries as a remedy for urinary issues.

However, scientific evidence to support the efficacy of ovate buchu for UTIs is limited. Some laboratory studies have shown that extracts of buchu possess mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically help with urinary tract infections, but these results are preliminary and largely based on in vitro (test tube) experiments rather than clinical trials in humans. The main active constituents identified in buchu include diosphenol and various flavonoids, which may contribute to its traditional use, but no robust clinical data are available to confirm its effectiveness or safety for treating or preventing UTIs. Overall, the use of ovate buchu for UTIs is justified by traditional practices, with only weak scientific support.
