Lotus, which may refer to various species such as Nelumbo nucifera (sacred lotus) or Nymphaea lotus (Egyptian lotus), has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, different parts of the lotus plant — including seeds, leaves, and flowers — have been used for various ailments, including as a diuretic and to "clear heat" from the body. These traditional concepts sometimes align with the management of symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as promoting urination or treating inflammation. However, there is little direct reference in authoritative ethnobotanical sources to the use of lotus specifically for treating UTIs, and the evidence that does exist is mostly anecdotal or based on broader therapeutic categories (such as "heat-clearing" herbs). Modern scientific studies on lotus and its extracts have shown some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but research specifically targeting UTI pathogens or clinical outcomes in UTI patients is lacking. No high-quality clinical trials support its use for UTIs. Thus, the rationale for lotus in UTI management is primarily based on traditional use, and the scientific evidence is minimal or indirect at best.
