For the health condition: Urinary Tract Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Java Tea (Orthosiphon stamineus), also known as Cat's Whiskers, has a history of use in Southeast Asian traditional medicine for urinary tract and kidney ailments. Modern scientific studies provide some support for its use in urinary tract infections (UTIs), although evidence remains limited and largely preclinical. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that extracts of Orthosiphon stamineus possess diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial properties. These effects may theoretically aid in flushing out pathogens and reducing inflammation in the urinary tract, potentially supporting UTI symptom relief. However, robust clinical trials in humans are scarce, and most studies focus on its general urinary health benefits rather than direct treatment or prevention of UTIs.
A few small clinical studies and reviews suggest some benefit in urinary tract conditions, but they often include Java Tea as part of polyherbal formulations, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to this plant. No major health authorities currently endorse Java Tea as a first-line or evidence-based treatment for UTIs. Overall, while there is a scientific basis for its historical use and some low-level evidence for supportive roles, more rigorous human trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for UTIs specifically.
