Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) has a long history of traditional use in Europe and North America as a remedy for urinary tract conditions, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Traditionally, herbalists have used goldenrod to promote diuresis (increased urine flow), which was thought to help flush out pathogens and irritants from the urinary tract. The German Commission E has officially approved goldenrod for supportive treatment of urinary tract infections and inflammation, as well as for the prevention and treatment of kidney gravel (small kidney stones), based largely on traditional usage and observational evidence rather than robust clinical trials.

Scientific studies on goldenrod are limited and do not provide strong evidence for its effectiveness against UTIs. Some in vitro studies have reported mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, and animal studies suggest diuretic properties. However, well-controlled human clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for treating or preventing UTIs are lacking. The primary basis for its use remains traditional practice and herbal monographs that cite historical and observational reports. Therefore, while goldenrod is commonly included in herbal blends for urinary health and has regulatory approval for supportive use in some countries, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for UTIs is considered weak to moderate and not based on modern clinical trial data.
