Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) has a long history of traditional use in Europe and North America as a remedy for urinary tract conditions, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Historically, goldenrod has been employed as a “diuretic” herb, believed to increase urine flow and help flush out the urinary tract. It is also used in traditional herbal medicine as an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent. The German Commission E, which evaluates the safety and efficacy of herbal remedies, has approved goldenrod for supportive treatment of urinary tract infections, as well as for the prevention and treatment of kidney stones and bladder inflammation.

However, scientific evidence supporting goldenrod’s efficacy for UTIs is limited. Laboratory studies have demonstrated some antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of goldenrod extracts, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most support rests on traditional use, historical texts, and the recommendations of herbal pharmacopeias. While goldenrod appears to be safe for most people when used appropriately, it should not be relied upon as the sole treatment for UTIs, especially since untreated UTIs can progress to more serious conditions.

In summary, while goldenrod is widely used in traditional herbal medicine for urinary tract support, there is only moderate scientific evidence (primarily preclinical) for its effectiveness in treating UTIs. Its use is best considered as an adjunct to, rather than a replacement for, standard medical care.
